Now that it’s November and the kids are settled in school and back in a routine, we’ve enrolled them in a couple activities that they’ve been asking about.
Of course that means that a couple days of the week, we are either driving to an activity or driving back home at dinner time and I was either giving the kids dinner really early or taking snacks with me to tide them over until we got home to eat.
But if your kids are like mine, their bodies are set to a clock and when it’s almost 5pm, they are starving. So instead, I’ve decided to start making On-the-Go Dinners that I can take with me. This way, when one child is waiting for the other or we are driving home, they are not driving me crazy with, “I’m so hungry, I’m so hungry!”
I thought I’d share a list of 8 On-the-Go Dinners for the Kids on the days that they have activities.
On-the-Go Dinner Ideas
1. English Muffin Pizza
Almost everyone loves pizza so these mini versions on an English muffins are perfect to take with you. Pair it with baby carrots and dip as well as apple slices for a full meal.
Taco Tuesday is a favourite in our house. Just take all those taco ingredients and roll them up in a tortilla, bake until they are crispy and then they are ready to go. Add a side of sour cream for dipping and some honey mandarin oranges for dessert and dinner is served.
3. Chicken strips
Homemade chicken strips are so easy to make and totally portable. Add some homemade fries, steamed edamame and a couple mini muffins and the kids will be happy to eat dinner on the go. If you’re tired of regular chicken strips, these lemon garlic ones are great too.
4. Grilled Cheese
Sandwiches are perfect for meals on the go. Try a regular grilled cheese or step it up. Then add celery with dip as well a handful of blueberries for a delicious dinner.
Meatballs go great with spaghetti but that’s not a good option for meal on the go as it can get a bit messy. Try making meatballs a little larger and serve them with a little side of pasta sauce for dipping. Add some snap peas and cantaloupe for a complete meal.
6. Mini Chicken Pot Pies
Chicken pot pies are so delicious and this miniature version is perfect for an on-the-go dinner. It has everything you need, protein, grains and veggies. Just add some of your kids’ favourite fruits on the side and you’re good to go!
