Simple Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

When winter hits and it starts getting dark at 4pm, I find myself feeling a little down. I’m not as happy or outgoing, just really not myself. I wasn’t able to put my finger on exactly why I was feeling that way, until I talked to a friend. Then I realized I might be affected with a little bit of the winter blues.

5 Simple Ways to Beat the Winter Blues
It’s not unusual. With the shorter days and colder temperatures, it can have an impact on how you feel. I started researching some of the ways on combatting the winter blues. Since it’s still a few months until Spring and this can affect everyone, I thought I would share some of the things that worked for me.

Here are 6 Simple Ways to Beat the Winter Blues.

1. Turn on the lights
Often, it’s the darkness that makes you feel blue because your body craves the daylight. So turn on all the lights and open all blinds in your house. Yes it might affect your bill a little but it’ll also help you feel better.

2. Turn up the music
Put your favourite, cheery tunes on full blast. Even let your self dance to the beat. Music can lift your mood and motivate you.

3. Get outside
Take advantage of the daylight. Bundle up and go for a walk. Bask in the natural light and fresh air. It can help you feel better and reduce the sadness symptoms.

4. Get dressed
Even though you may not feel like it, get dressed in something you like, brush your hair and put on a little bit of make up. The adage, If you look good, you feel good, is actually true to a certain extent.

5. Go Exercise
The last thing you probably want to do when you’re feeling down, is exercise. But once you actually get there and do it, you’ll be glad you did. Not only does it feel good, it’s clinically proven to get your adrenaline pumping and help with depression.

6. Meet with a Friend
Call a friend who you love talking to or who really inspires you and meet up for a coffee date. Sometimes, getting out of your routine and chatting with someone about how you are feeling, can really make a difference.

These are some of the things that I try and do when I’m feeling a little down and blue. It’s not going to make everything perfect, but it really does help. If you suffer from a more severe depression, please consult a professional.

  1. I think I have it too. I step out of office hoping to complete lot of stuff, but as soon as I see the weather, I feel gloomy and end up doing nothing. Hitting gym is perhaps the best way, it helps to rejuvenate the energy levels. Great tips! Thanks for sharing

  2. Years ago, I suffered from the seasonal blues. And you are further north than I am, even if your weather is milder. I found the best start to a cure to be exercise. Once your mood starts to lift, the other suggestions (all are good ones) become easier. But, it is a problem for so many – timely post.
