Family Photos – 2014

Growing up we had lots of family portraits taken. They were the ones where you would go to Sears or Walmart and pose in front of a cheesy background and stand on a block or put your arm on someone’s shoulder and say cheese. I’m sure we’ve all done those photos. I love looking back at them now and seeing how we all grew and changed over the years. It’s such a wonderful memory to have.

Once Keyan and Kyah were both born, we knew our family was complete so that year we did our first family photos. They were different than the ones we did growing up. The photographer came to us, used the natural light and took some amazing photos. Since then, Family Photos have become an annual tradition for us and we look forward to them every year!

Family Photo 2011

This year we were happy to get Roxana Photography to do our family session. She is actually a friend who I used to work with a long time ago and we stayed connected via social media. Over the years, I kept seeing her beautiful photos in my Facebook  and Instagram feeds and when I asked if she would do our annual family photos, she said yes! I was so excited.

We usually have our session in September but Roxana suggested we wait until November to capitalize on the beautiful colors of fall and boy am I glad we did. We got some amazing pictures and the backgrounds took my breath away.

Roxana was so easy to work with and she was great with the kids too. She took her time, we never felt rushed at all and she made everyone feel comfortable. When I look at the photos, I feel like Roxana captured the inner beauty and happiness of Keyan and Kyah.

By the end of the session, we were confident that they were going to be great pictures. And I didn’t have to wait long to find out. A day later she sent us a sneak peak and a couples of days after that, we got all the photos which were put in a gallery that we could download from.  What is so great about that, is the gallery is up for 10 years and we can look at them and share them with family and friends.

If you’re looking into doing photos for your family, Roxana Photography actually has a special right now for family sessions and you can get all the details right here.

P.S. If you know anyone who is getting married, Roxana is also an amazing wedding photographer!!

So do you also do annual family photos or do you just casually capture moments when you’re together? And do you use professional photographers or is it just a timer on your camera? We do both, capture moments when we when they arise and have a professional help us out once a year. It’s definitely worth it!

  1. Beautiful family! It’s so fun to schedule a family photo shoot. We had our first two years ago in Central Park. That being said, this year, we’ve got a Sears sitting scheduled. We just need a quick image for our holiday cards-lol

  2. What lovely photos and what a beautiful family! My favourite is the one with the kiddos holding hands 🙂 Show them that one when they’re bickering!

  3. Can I have your little girl? She is always so adorable. The whole family is, actually. You can certainly tell you’re all related. Beautiful shots. I love the black & white one of your son and daughter too. So cute. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Lovely photos. When my son was young, we used a professional photographer. And this was before digital photos, so no downloads and all the pictures are from film. We had to go the studio. What a difference 20 years makes!

    1. Yes Alana, things definitely have changed in 20 years 🙂 That’s great that you had family photos taken, it’s such a great memory to have.

  5. Salma- Randy and I just looked at the photos. They are fabulous. Waiting until Autumn was a great idea. But you can’t ever go wrong with such a beautiful family. Love and miss you. Zaheeda

  6. Like everyone else I am going to comment on your lovely family. And I always love the more “real” looking family photos. When My daughter was little we did a ton of the Sears photo shots.

One time when she was almost 16 we were out one day and I looked over at her and she “looked 16” I thought she was exactly and completely the look of 16. So I told her to make a note of her outfit and that I wanted to take her in for photos. She thought I was nuts…but agreed.

A week later we went into JC Penny with her best friend.

They ended up spending 2 hours in the session (which usually lasts about 15 minutes.) The photographer was having so much fun with them that we just kept going 🙂

The photos of each girl completely capture “16” and the photos of the 2 of them together completely capture their friendship.

To this day they are some of my favorite photos of her. And her and her best friend still have them up on their walls. (The girls are now a month from 25). 🙂

  7. Wonderful pics of a wonderful family! We had the family pictures growing up as well. I have to admit that we don’t really take the time nowadays for formal family portraits. Mostly we just snap pictures when we’re together on a family holiday. Taking the time to arrange for a photo session is definitely on my list, though, after seeing the pics that you’ve shared!

  8. This comment is from dad.
I must have seen this photographs several times this week.
I am now revisiting the photographs and enjoying them.I get opportunity to enjoy the photographs o the family

    Love you guys

  9. Your family is gorgeous MashaAllah. And the little ones oh just beyond adorable. I am a little partial to Kyah though 😉 Their eyes! We’ve never really done family photos. They seem like such a good idea. Maybe we’ll start them this year. I really like the idea of it.
